Five teams composed of college students will travel to six destinations in the country for a period of seven days in the 2nd Juan for Fun Backpacker Challenge.
Lawyer Helen Catalbas, Department of Tourism-6 (DOT-6) Regional Director, said that DOT-6, in partnership with Cebu Pacific Air, is holding the second year of the backpacker challenge to create awareness of the distinct culture of each destination and promote budget-friendly travel to every Filipino.
Catalbas said that the students will be given the opportunity to discover other cultures and wander for free through this event slated on August 27 to September 2.
The DOT said that all universities and colleges in the region have been invited to have their students ages 17-23 years old, residing in the Philippines and enrolled in an undergraduate or post-graduate program in their respective institutions to take part in the event.
The backpacker challenge will give the students the opportunity to visit museums, theme parks, churches, and other tourist spots, try local delicacies, and other fun activities the local destination offers.
The winning team dubbed as Juan for Fun Ultimate Backpackers will get exciting prizes including 12-round trip tickets to any local (except Caticlan, Coron, and Busuanga) or international destination (limited to short-haul destinations) and a 3-day/2-night local tour package for three courtesy of DOT.
The DOT said that through the Juan for Fun Ultimate Backpacker Challenge, traveling in the Philippines is truly more fun. (JSC/Leonard T. Pineda-PIA6 Iloilo)
